Discussion relating to the club's permanent HO layout in the Student Alumni Union (Building 4) on the campus of RIT.

Layout projects for 2007-2008

Postby Otto Vondrak » Sun Sep 23, 2007 6:22 pm

Hi everyone,

I had some ideas I wanted to share, things we could possibly work on during the coming year. As a "tradition," we always try to have something new to show off on the layout- a new scene, a new building, maybe some effect (like lighting or backdrops)...

While the layout looks "complete," there's a few things I thought of...

- Genesee Brewery complex

- Backdrop area behind Brown Street

- Trees and vegetation around Scudderville and Alexander

- Repair grade crossing protection at Central Ave and Platt/Brown Streets

- Area to the left of High Falls, behind the track that leads to Buffalo staging

None of these projects have proposals or budgets yet... but they are all projects that will enhance our model railroad. Does anyone have any other ideas? Things they see they would like to work on?

For the area in back of the track that leads to Buffalo, to the left of High Falls, I was thinking the Walther's American Hardware would be a great filler for that space. It's also reminiscent of a warehouse near the real Genesee Brewery downtown.

If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions (newbies, I'm looking in your direction), please toss 'em out here for discussion.

We could call it Seneca Paper. They had a large building on West Main st. just west of the B&O depot...

Okay, so both buildings I'm looking for at Walthers are backordered.

Parkview Terrace:

American Hardware Warehouse:

Says they wont be in stock until December. Any other ideas for improvements we could make to the layout in time for the train show?

What about some more "low relief structures" behind the mainline between Alexander and Buffalo?

Just cause they're back ordered doesnt mean we cant find them. Syracuse is this weekend ... there should be a few vendors with way too many walthers kits :)

Smith- Good ideas. The Parkview Terrace is a low-relief building. And there is the other factory that is meant to go there as well. Also was thinking of cutting Danny's furniture factory in half and putting it behind Brown Street. Would also like to get more city photographs back there, too. Smith, can you think of any others we can stick back there?

Dave- a very good idea. Scout out the dealers and see if any has the buildings we're looking for. I know American Hardware retails for $50 and the Parkview Terrace I think is like $30.

Walsh- I am undecided if I am coming up or not... I may be in Scranton or I may just stay home in bed all day. I'm getting too old for the five-hour commute.

Ok, here's an "idea" there used to be a small bulk coal dealer that was served by the B&O just west of the station platforms at the Rohchester station. The silos were visible just above the NYC main when looking south from the north side.

It's just a little guy but it'll add some flavor, kinda like garlic powder...

Just south of the NYC main in the area just west of Lincoln Park there was a Gerber plant that had a water tower shaped like a giant bottle of baby food, complete with a label!!!
... I don't remember what the flavor was but is was red.

Not a bad idea... but we don't have *that* much room.

Hey Smith... can you think of a way to cut our Furniture Factory in half. You know the one I'm talking about (up on top of the cabinet that we never used?)... anyway, I want to use half and put it against the backdrop behind Brown Street. Maybe a bandsaw. Thoughts?

Well, I have a scroll saw here but I'd think that careful cutting with a #11 or a razor saw would tend to be more precise. If cut skillfully you could use all 4 sides as background material.
