Soundtraxx DCC Sound

Postby Luther Brefo » Mon Feb 20, 2006 2:53 pm

Has anyone had any experiences with these decoders? I know Dave and Chris have the QSI sound but Soundtraxx has something that no one else has to date...ALCo Sounds...

Listen to this for example...

Walsh, what decoder is in your SF Warbonnet F7 set?

The soundtraxx Alco sounds were pretty good, I just wish that there was less air horn and bell and more engine sounds.
Cheesie is cool, but is it Cheesy?

Class of ? God only knows ...

you CAN configure the decoder variables so that you get the results you want - unless you want like compressor popofsf, etc etc, then that really is kinda hard to do i think.. but u can program the decoder to change the sound level of individual sounds (to an extent)

I read that the compressor can actually be turned off completely. Also, the sounds are in four groups and the four groups have one volume setting per group. Things like the bell have "ding-rate" and the likes.

Personally, I think I would find the best balance to be with louder engine, softer bell, medium horn, very low compressor, very low dynamic brakes, and medium metal on metal squeals and scrapes.

I like Luther's idea. Grouping the sounds with different volume settings. We should try to do that, though not before the show Sunday...

a) resize your icon.

b) the only locos that (i think) can be configured are soundtraxx equipped locos, and mine is the only one on the layout at this moment.

I have a KATO SD80MAC that I rigged up with a Soundtraxx Decoder. I'm pleased with the sound, it's realistic and crisp sounding.

I just wish I could have found a better way to get larger speaker into the 80MAC car body. LOL

You could use the fuel tank. It might weaken the chassis, however depending on how much metal you removed.

I've already installed the sound decoder. I looked at the fuel tank, but decided that the engine would be far too light if I hollowed out enough room.

I occasionally have that unit leading a train, I've thought about gutting one of my old Athearn Bluebox SD40-2's and wiring the speakers up in that and just keeping the two engines together permanently.

you could consider getting another unit from kato, then omitting the mechanism, thus dummifying the locomotive. As a result, you can daisy chain the pickups, so instead of 6-wheel pickup, you have 12-wheel pickup. It's possible.... would also give you more room for lighting details and stuff

Good possibility, I have 4 KATO 80MACs now, I dread how much extra weight that adds to dummy the 4th for lugging coal up my hill, but that could be done. LOL

I'll explore that. Thanks
